The Personality Core of the Sentry Turret is located within the outer shell, right above the guns. They are launched, shell and all, with a spring-loaded mechanism called the Projectile Acceleration Cylinder, which is guarded by the Aperture Turret External Barrel. In addition, bullets are not "fired" in the traditional sense as there's no propellant explosion driving them. Aperture-Brand Resolution Pellets are the only type of ammunition that is recommended for use with a Sentry Turret. These weapons, the machine guns, along with its antenna are normally hidden inside the body, during the Turret's "sleep mode".Īperture-Brand Resolution Pellets, the bullets for a Sentry Turret's guns, are simply dumped into its hollow body, called the Shell Redistribution Chamber this allows for an unusually large supply of ammunition for such a small device (in-game, the sentry guns have infinite ammunition). Upon seeing that there are no more targets, the Sentry Turret will return to sleep mode after three seconds. When no targets are in visual range, the Sentry will scan the area in a sweeping motion with its laser targeting beam. They will begin to fire at any visible targets (usually Test Subjects, intruders or dummies). Upon visual acquisition of the target, the Sentry Turret will come to full alert, and the machine guns will emerge. The Sentry Turrets are armed with two dual machine guns, which can only be armed once a target comes within visual sight. At Wheatley's encouragement, Chell ignores it, but the Sentry Turret politely says "thanks anyway" with a hint of shattered hopes. In one scene in Portal 2, an Oracle Turret is seen stuck inside the Aperture Science Pipe Network, who attempts to get Chell and Wheatley's attention. They will even forgive Chell for knocking them over. They have a strangely polite demeanor, which is in direct contrast with their deadly behavior. Sentry Turrets often speak in a sweet child-like, artificial voice similar to GLaDOS and a lavatory bowl within the Enrichment Center. They appear to vary in size, from half the size of the player-character to many times larger the majority are all of the same size, but it is never shown how large they are. Sentry Turrets are commonly seen serving as guards in the maintenance areas of the Enrichment Center, and during testing as an obstacle to the Test Subject. Examination of the newer unit did seem to indicate they had made minor adjustments to the “eye”, in that the black “straw” that directs light back to the sensor was shorter, which would no doubt allow more light to get to the sensor.Īll and all, the product is great, and ThinkGeek’s service was exemplary. The Aperture Sentry Turret has a single red eye/sensor, a sleek appearance, and predominately white color scheme which is common in most Aperture Science technology. It could “see” me walk by in the hall, and would respond to other motions. Cool! The new one arrived a few days later, and low and behold, it worked great. At that point, I contacted them again, and they promptly shipped out a replacement, and rather than having me ship the old one back, just asked me to toss it. Rather than ship the old one back for a refund, I decided to wait until they had them back in stock, which was about 2 weeks later. A quick email to ThinkGeek resulted in a prompt response of “seems defective”, but alas, they were out of stock. The motion part worked great, and knocking it over resulted in various sayings from the game.Ī quick examination of the “eye” found a stray piece of plastic in the opening, but still lousy performance. It basically required shining a flashlight into the “eye” (which is actually a small black tube opening below the glowing eye). Upon receiving it, I thought it looked extremely cool, but was a bit disappointed with the performance of the motion sensor. I waited patiently for them to come into stock, and promptly ordered one for early December. When I first saw ThinkGeek advertising the Plush Portal 2 Turret, I thought it sounded extremely cool.
